Tapestries – From the Old World to the New

Tapestries – From the Old World to the New

Europe has been a major source of tapestry art since the Middle Ages, when these decorative wall hangings served as a pictorial history of the times. When the Americas began to be settled by Europeans, tapestries came along to grace the walls of the more fortunate. Owning fine wall hangings was status symbol among wealthy merchants and relocated nobles, and some of the finest tapestries from France and England made their way across the Atlantic to take up residence in the Colonies.

The Old World…

Master bedrooms in Europe sported tapestries not only on the walls but hung around the four-posters themselves. This created a warm resting place for the master and mistress of the household, as well as some privacy. Depictions of angels were common on such bed hangings, as were family crests and coat of arms. Heavy cords were used as tiebacks to allow the curtains to be drawn back by day, and closed at night.

Wall hung tapestries were often ornately decorated with landscapes, hunting scenes or floral designs. These could range from narrow vertical pieces suitable for framing a doorway to gargantuan masterpieces large enough to cover an entire wall. Smaller tapestries were often decorated further with embroidery to make accents stand out, such as a bird’s eye or a gemstone in a lady’s ring.

Some tapestries showed a historic or mythological event; battles fought against men or dragons, fair maidens won by knights or unicorns. The practice of preserving history on warp and weft included scenes from all walks of life, and portrayals could be startlingly accurate. Natural history was as common a subject as any, and some of the renditions of English birds (notably cockerels) are truly spectacular in their attention to detail and their accuracy.

…And the New

Tapestries were the height of fashion in the early years of the American settlements. Colonists followed the example of the London wealthy and imported English, French and Italian tapestries to hang in their parlors and bedrooms. Some of the most popular designs of the times later became standards to be looked up to, emulated and designed after by American weavers.

As the industrial age gave rise to the nouveau riche, tapestries came more into vogue. They graced the mansions and country homes alike of the upper class, providing an air of luxury. The invention of the Jacquard loom made tapestries more affordable for the middle class as well, allowing merchants and trades folk to enjoy the wall hangings that they had hitherto only been able to admire as they provided them to the more affluent.

New patterns were constantly invented, and by the time of William Morris there was a revolution in the Arts and Crafts world. This opened the doors to a whole new way of looking at wall art and reproductions of famous tapestries became common. The color and texture provided by tapestries was greatly appreciated during this extremely tactile stage of artistic awakening, and more tapestries were being used as decorative touches in homes across the country.

The reign of Queen Victoria marked an era of lavish furnishing, including paintings and tapestries. The lush floral patterns of the times provided a rich counterpart to the intricate woodworking and swan like lines of the furniture of the age. In America, the wealthy in the East followed suit, and as the Westward Expansion continued the trends slowly worked their way towards the Pacific coast.

Tapestries in the Modern Age

By the mid 1900′s a completely new appreciation of tapestries had surfaced once again. As people became more apt to change with the times and move from place to place with the help of modern transportation, tapestries became beloved for their ability to instantly turn a new house into a home. They traveled easily, rolled up in canvas and carried by ship or train, to be unrolled and re-hung at their new home.

The cost of tapestries in comparison to framed quality paintings is quite affordable. One nice piece can cover a wall and set the tone for an entire room. With the huge variety of patterns and styles available, it is not hard to find a wall hanging that not only blends with your decorating scheme but speaks top you on an inner level. You can echo your own personality or choose a tapestry that represents the way you see the world – or wish you could.

Tapestries are a fine addition to any living space; even if you can’t afford a huge nine by twelve foot reproduction of a masterpiece there are hundreds of sizes, shapes and styles. Look for one that will fit into a special place in your house, and align with your budget. Over the years you can add to your collection, and each new wall hanging will seem like an old friend!

Canvas Art From Your Dreams To Your Walls

The most beautiful homes are just empty shells until the owner infuses it with his or her taste and style. After bringing in the furniture and making the place comfortable, it is time to think of making it beautiful as well by bringing in some art. The most effective art form for home decorating is wall art, particularly canvas art.

For each person, beautiful might mean a different thing. It is the same with wall art – there is no right or wrong choice, it comes down to your individuality and artistic style. We often say that someone has bad taste, or wonderful taste, but what we are really saying is that their taste is not our taste. Taste also changes with fashions and, through history, what was ugly in one period became beautiful in another.

But, we care what other things about us and our home and we want our home to be seen as beautiful, so we are having often great difficulties in choosing what to use to decorate our home. The easiest way to make sure that what we consider good taste will also be approved of by our friends and relatives, is to get a piece of art by a reputable art dealer. Of course, for us who cannot afford art available in art galleries, there are online galleries, which sell much more affordable wall art.

The most popular form of wall art is canvas art, particularly tapestries. The popularity of tapestries is growing because the technology is making this timeless art form affordable. In addition, the choice of themes, colors, sizes and prices is endless and there is something for everyone.

To choose the right tapestry for your walls, you have to decide what is it that you want to achieve. If you would like a dramatic effect and your ceilings are high, your best options are large pieces of canvas art, hanging from the rod almost from the ceiling. For smaller places, one or two small tapestries would achieve wonderful cozy and timeless feel.

Don’t forget the lighting: a small spot light would make your tapestry stand out and get the visibility it deserves. If you want to have a heirloom piece, your options are endless, but you should go for a traditional or medieval piece. They never go out of fashion and the time makes them just more beautiful, fading their vivid colors to a soft muted beauty.

Canvas art can be customized as well. Wedding pictures are particularly popular. The manufacturer will digitize your photo and convert it into the tapestry design. Experienced weavers will transport your magic moment into even more magic piece of art. Your children’s photos are also very popular.

One use for canvas art is gaining popularity among corporate users: canvas art depicting encouraging and motivational messages. As you can see, there is no end of possibility with canvas art. With wonderful online galleries and great choice and advice they offer, this wonderful form of wall art is yours without even leaving your home.

Care Labels are Often Missing from Bedspreads

Care Labels are Often Missing from Bedspreads

A comforter can be used for the winter months but the bedspread is brought out of the linen closet in the spring when it’s warming up and the whole world is freshening and renewing itself. A bedspread is available in most any color, pattern or fabric and it can be one of the most expensive items you put in your bedroom. The government has specific care labeling rules when it comes to clothing etc. Did you know that these expensive pieces of fabric do not fall under the rule? The Care Label Rule of 1971 requires clothing manufacturers and importers to attach care labels to their products. They must give full instructions on how to satisfactorily care for the products, or clearly state that it cannot be cleaned. The label also needs to warn against things that could be harmful such as using an iron or using hot water. I have been surprised on more than one occasion when the label said dry clean only and I would have thrown it in the washing machine. Often, care instructions are on a temporary label, a piece of paper in the plastic, hang tag, or somewhere on the package so check clearly before you throw any packaging.

If the care label is missing, what is the best way to proceed to clean the bedspread? Things you can do to ensure a beautiful bedspread for many years of wear are, make sure the spread has been preshrunk. Fabric can shrink two or three percent very easily if it has not been properly stabilized by the manufacturer. Your bedspread will look like it’s sized for a twin bed very quickly if it shrinks that much. Check the quality of stitches if you have a quilted bedspread. The first preference would be for stitching to run vertically and horizontally with the stitches running only eight to ten inches apart. Make sure that the stitches are the correct length as well. Loose stitching can tear easily and allow fiber fill to shift when it is washed or dry cleaned. Check the fiber content of the batting. If you see wool on a label, take note that it will probably shrink in the washing machine. The filling of your beautiful new bedspread could also become puckered if it has heat sensitive fibers. If this is the case, you may wash it in cold, but don’t dry it in the dryer, or at least a very cool one. If the bedspread you have chosen is a chintz material, it will have a luster to the finish. This finish is actually a glaze that may have a limited staying power. Once the spread is washed or cleaned, the glaze may come off and your spread will be dull and chalky or pill. Fabrics can fade over time especially if the bed is located near a window. Nothing you can do short of pulling shades will stop this process. A dry cleaner can perform a colorfast test and better quality bedspreads should be colorfast. Clean all of the matching pillow shams, dust ruffles and curtains together with the spread because the colors won’t “fade” the same if you don’t. These are pretty large so you may not be able to put it in the conventional washing machine. Don’t risk your investment, if you are unsure how to care for your new spread, take it to a professional cleaner.

Jamdani’ – Fabrics From The Singing Looms Of Bengal

Jamdani’ – Fabrics From The Singing Looms Of Bengal

A legend says that Emperor Aurangzeb went into fit of rage when, one day he saw his daughter wearing nothing. On his rebuke, she replied that she is wearing not one, but seven dresses covering her body. Such is the fineness of the Indian hand woven fabrics.

Walking through the narrow streets of Bengal, one can hear the magical spell of looms, the rhythmic singing of shuttles making the musical ‘tak-tak’. This sound keeps reverberating in the Indian clothing culture for the past 2000 years. Hand woven fabrics have been infamous for its culture and virtues since time immemorial. Despite globalization and technology, this craft has its own evergreen place in the mind of cultural lovers.

Ethical fabrics from Bengal:

Jamdani is one of the most beautiful textiles of Bengal.  Jamdani means, a vase of flowers. History of this fabric dates back to the early ages, wherein mentions of the fabric are seen scripted in Arthashashtra written by Kautilya. The glory of this fabric can also be seen mentioned in the writings of Chinese, Italian, and Arab travelers. No wonder, great Roman emperors paid remarkable prices for this Indian cotton.

Basically this fabric is of unbleached cotton yarn. Alluring designs are created in an innovative way in this fabric using bleached cotton yarn so as to give a light and dark effect. Weaving methods resemble the tapestry work where small shuttles of gold and silver colored threads are passed through the weft.

Designs and Colors:

The weaving pattern combines intricate surface designs supplemented with delicate floral sprays. Saris are woven using this method are called as terchha. The part of the sari which goes over the shoulder is decorated with motifs called jhalar. The most popular design is known as panna hazaar meaning a thousand emeralds. Phulwar is yet another pattern used in Jamdani fabrics, which is normally created in black, bluish black, grey and off white background hues. These patterns were in vogue and were much sought after during the Mughal period.

The traditional color of blue known as nilambari is dyed in indigo. Designs such as toradar meaning a bouquet are preserved as their family skills, and are passed down through generations. Thus, the designs and colors used in making the fabric differ from family to family, and have their own individuality.

For weaving the fabric, the elementary pit loom is used. The needle is made from buffalo horn or tamarind wood. The fabrics are further dyed using various process such as resist dyeing, tie dyeing, and other methods. Various natural materials are used in this process. Shellac is used for red, turmeric for yellow hue, pomegranate rinds for green, and iron shaving and vinegar to bring black color.

Global Market for Jamdani Fabrics:

And looms constitute the biggest cottage industry of India, engaging millions of looms in weaving the traditional beauty of the countries heritage in cotton, silk and other natural fibres. One can hardly see a village in Bengal, where weavers do not exist. The region in and around Dhaka is infamous for this wonder fabric.

This exquisitely woven delicate cotton muslin fabric is admired to be one of the best among the skilled craftsmen of South Asia. Due to the skills and dexterity involved in the making of this fabric, generally, they are of high price. Despite its expensive price tags, demand for this fabric never declines.

Mostly used in the making of saris, this fabric is also used for making scarves, handkerchiefs, and many other creative applications. Outfits of this fabric has become an essential part of a women’s wardrobe; especially the Bengalis. This craft is a fusion of the 2000 year old tradition of Bengal, with the blend of techniques from the Middle East. Due to its quality and exquisiteness, it is rightly called as woven with thread of winds.
