Snowdonia History And Culture: Ten Must-See Museums of Snowdonia

Snowdonia History And Culture: Ten Must-See Museums of Snowdonia

In the thousands of years since man first made Snowdonia his home, life in the region has changed almost beyond recognition. From Iron Age settlers and Roman invaders to Jacobean altruism and the Industrial Revolution, there’s no better way to learn about Snowdonia’s history than to pay a visit to one of Snowdonia’s many museums.

One of the wonderful things about Snowdonia’s museums is that they’re often situated in historic buildings, giving visitors a real sense of place and time that you’re unlikely to encounter in modern, purpose-built museums.

The following are ten of Snowdonia’s most fascinating museums, covering everything from Roman archaeology to early 20th century statesmanship.

1. Gwynedd Museum and Art Gallery, Bangor

Gwynedd Museum and Art Gallery houses some fascinating exhibits depicting the rich and varied history of North Wales. Exhibits include some fantastic Roman artefacts, including the finest Roman sword in Britain, and a wonderful furniture collection which includes a 17th century oak drawer chest.

2. On The Quay at Barmouth

On The Quay at Barmouth is three attractions rolled into one. Barmouth Sailors’ Institute, built in 1890, includes a Victorian reading room which still looks much as it did when it was built. Ty Gwyn dates to 1460 and was one of the earliest buildings to be built in the shelter of the anchorage. And Ty Crwn, built in 1834 as a lock-up, has two cells – one each for men and women.

3. Quaker Heritage Centre, Dolgellau

Entry to the Quaker Heritage Centre is free, and it’s worth a visit to learn about the Quaker community that once lived in Dolgellau, and the persecution they endured which led to their emigration to Pennsylvania.

4. Trefriw Woollen Mills, Conwy Valley

Take a free tour of the Trefriw Woollen Mills and see the working mill museum and turbine house. Trefriw are manufacturers of traditional Welsh bedspreads, tapestries and tweeds, and their shop sells a great range of products made on-site, as well as pure wool knitwear and sheepskin items.

5. Lloyd George Museum, Llanystumdwy

The Lloyd George Museum is based at the childhood home of David Lloyd George, Britain’s Prime Minister during the First World War. As well as telling the story of Lloyd George’s life, the museum includes a Victorian classroom where children can dress in Victorian costume and learn what life was like for Victorian children.

6. Almshouse Museum, Llanrwst

The Llanrwst Almshouse Museum is run as a community museum, safeguarding the  Jacobean building in which it’s housed. Established in 1610 by Sir John Wynn of Gwydir, the almshouses provided homes for elderly members of the community until the 1970s, when they were deemed unfit for habitation. Now restored, the museum offers a fascinating glimpse into hundreds of years of life in a typical Welsh market town.

7. Dinorwic Quarry Hospital, Llanberis

The Dinorwic Quarry Hospital was built for the 19th and 20th century quarrymen at the nearby quarry. This is one of Snowdonia’s most unusual museums, and includes a restored ward and operating theatre (with associated gruesome medical instruments), a mortuary and an original X-ray machine. This is one of the few hospitals of its kind in Britain, and is a fascinating attraction for all the family – except, perhaps, anyone who’s a bit squeamish!

8. Regimental Museum of the Royal Welch Fusiliers, Caernarfon

Caernarfon Castle is, in itself, a wonderful attraction that will keep you enthralled for many hours. But nestled in the Queen’s Tower, and part of the Chamberlain Tower, you’ll find an added attraction – the Regimental Museum of the Royal Welch Fusiliers. This museum houses a comprehensive collection of military memorabilia from the past few centuries, and tells of life in the Regiment from its beginnings to modern times. Exhibits include centuries-old uniforms and kit, and information about Britain’s most famous military campaigns and personnel.

9. Narrow Gauge Railway Museum, Tywyn

Part of the Talyllyn Railway, the Narrow Gauge Railway Museum is housed at Tywyn Wharf Station. The museum has an excellent collection of artefacts from over 80 British narrow gauge railways, including seven locomotives, tickets and signalling gear. There’s also a special exhibition dedicated to the Reverend W V Awdry, creator of Thomas the Tank Engine.

10. National Slate Museum, Llanberis

With slate playing such a big part in the history of Snowdonia, no visit to the region would be complete without a visit to the National Slate Museum. Situated in the original Victorian workshops of the Dinorwic Quarry, the museum tells the story of slate and what it was like to live as a quarryman in Snowdonia during the 19th century. The workshops are designed to look as if workers have literally just downed tools for the day, and the numerous talks, demonstrations and exhibits play out all the dramas of everyday life at the quarry.

Tapestry – Welcome to the World of Color

Tapestry – Welcome to the World of Color

For literally eons, Tapestry Art has been created within many cultures around the globe. Tapestries have been used to adorn some of the most important buildings in history, the castles of Kings and Queens, Cathedrals, and the homes of affluent Noblemen and women. Created by highly skilled Artisans and Craftsmen, Tapestries were considered a luxury. Tapestry is one of the most successful and expressive forms of literature in the world, some of the most historical and important stories of old have been woven into these stunningly beautiful wall hangings. The incredible skills involved in creating a Tapestry are unquestionable. Today, thanks to ancient Tapestries, we can marvel at stories portrayed hundreds, even thousands of years ago, regardless of where, or by whom they were written. Theres no doubt, Tapestry speaks a universal language which can be admired and understood by everyone.

During the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries the romanticism and mystery of Gothic art became highly influential upon woven Tapestry Art. More often, these Tapestries would focus on religious themes, portraying the relationship between man and his maker. It would be the artists prerogative, as to how this was portrayed. Although during the Middle Ages, their license would not be as liberal as now. Through Tapestry, an artist would be expected to create their own visions, those which would be conjured up from their own understanding of the story to be told. In true Gothic style, they would be romantic, spiritual and most of all perceptive. Medieval Tapestries captured the intellectual grandeur of the time, as much, if not more, than it recorded actual events.

During these times, Tapestry became a status symbol for the aristocracy. However, Tapestries were also put to great practical use, insulating the huge walls of the Nobilitys castles, covering doorways and providing privacy in the bedroom. Many Tapestries might be joined together, making them hundreds of feet long. Today, we use Tapestries in our homes for decoration, and yet they do still have these same practical qualities. In times past, Royals and the Aristocracy would take Tapestries with them, when travelling or in battle. Again, not only using Tapestries to display their wealth and to impress upon people their prestige and status, but to provide comfort. During battle, Tapestries would become the property of the victor. Unfortunately, many Tapestries were unceremoniously cut, in such a way as to make the crest and the stories of those defeated unrecognisable. Many Tapestries were also burned, in order to recover the precious metals often woven into the design.

Medieval Tapestries were created from a limited palette, with no more than twenty colours available to weavers. Despite these limitations, the highly skilled and knowledgeable weavers were able to create amazingly colourful Tapestries. Later on, many contemporary painters of the early nineteenth century would experiment with that knowledge, creating a new art form, known as pointillism8, whereby these pure colours would be painted as single dots. Like the Tapestry weavers before them, these artists knew that from a distance, the eye and the brain would blend those coloured dots together to create shape and tone. As with Tapestries, look closely, and the picture is actually a series of dots. France was known as the most influential European country for Tapestries, and the French painter Seurat was one of the most influential with regards to Pointillism.

Medieval Tapestries used dyes from plants and insects and many are still used today. Of course, now we have a virtually limitless range of colours, and this is reflected in the vivacity of modern Tapestry Art. With so many options available, artists are not limited by colours or by subject. Modern Tapestry has many faces, and can portray many things. Top artists are licensing their works to be reproduced as Tapestries, because they understand its capacities. Many people are choosing to hang Tapestries in their home, because they realise their beauty. Tapestry offers a tactile medium which cannot be compared, nor rivalled by canvas and paint. In our homes, a modern Tapestry can add the same warmth to a room as ancient Tapestries once did for the courts of Kings. But thankfully, nowadays, we dont have to take our Tapestries travelling, to ensure we get some privacy!

Need Tips on Wedding Head Table Decorations?

Need Tips on Wedding Head Table Decorations?

It used to be that the entire bridal party sat together at the reception, but these days, most brides and grooms opt for a “sweetheart” table at their reception. There isn’t much time to sit, with dancing and spending time with your guests, but it is nice to have a place to take a quick break and have a moment within all the busy to just be with your new spouse.

This doesn’t mean that you can’t have a table devoted to highlighting your bridal party, which is always an option. You may also choose to just have a table for you, your spouse, maid/matron of honor and best man. Always remember, it is your day, and you may design it however you want. Whatever you decide, this is a special table and should be treated as such. You could decide to have special floral arrangements created for this table or a colored table linen that complements your bridal party colors. Include wedding pictures of your parents’ and grandparents’ at their head table to create a really special, personal affect.

Some reception sites may have special chairs that can be used at this table to draw everyone’s attention. Most places would be happy to accommodate your bringing your own special seating if you have it. If the seating at your location is the same, talk to your florist about doing something special to the seating, perhaps with floral vines or fabric to make them stand out. If you have chosen to include columns during your ceremony, this is a great opportunity to reuse them to frame out the new bride and groom.

Take the decorations, if you have them, from your ceremony and decorate your table and chairs. Larger floral arrangements that were used to decorate the alter, could be placed to flank your table. Make the most of your purchase and reuse any decorations you can.

The Great Characteristics Of An Alternative Down Comforter

The Great Characteristics Of An Alternative Down Comforter

People like to design their room in different ways, and a great product that has been out for several years are alternative down comforters. The reason that these are worth buying is because they are usually made at a high quality to be competitive with down comforters. The material is synthetic, but it feels exactly the same.
The great thing about these products is that they look exactly like a down comforter, and the materials inside make the comforter nearly as soft as their counterpart. They, however, will cost less because down can be rather expensive. Comforters are also great purchases because they are much more plush compared to quilts and bedspreads. They can give a bed a much more inviting look. They also can provide more warmth on cold winter days.
The main reason for buying these comforters is that they look and feel very comfortable. They really make someone feel like they are ready to rest. There is no worry that they will feel cold.
There are different kinds of comforters that one can buy. There are different sizes such as queen size, twin, or king size comforters. As said, there are different qualities of these comforters, so if one likes the feel of less expensive ones then they are as acceptable to use.
One thing that people need to get if they buy a comforter is the duvet cover. These protect the comforter because no one wants to replace these things sooner than they have to. Duvets are great because are cheaper but they give the comforter design, too. If someone has an orange room, an orange duvet would look great on the comforter.
The prices for these differ depending on the quality and the type of brand. To buy one, one can go online and search for great prices. They can also go the linen stores to find the best deals. This is a great way to see which one a person prefers.
One thing that people should get for their bed is a comforter. These make the bed look so much more comfortable, and it really does help to relax for a good night sleep. If one wants to buy one, they are always on sale at stores. Even though it is synthetic, it is just as comfortable but for a cheaper cost. They are just as warm and they feel almost like down comforters.

Tapestry Art – Verdure Tapestries

Tapestry Art – Verdure Tapestries

Tapestries were produced in Europe from around the twelfth century, when it is believed, the art of weaving was introduced from the East. It is thought some small scale Tapestries may have been produced during Medieval times. However, it was actually towards the end of this period, and throughout the Renaissance, when Tapestry Art production reached a pinnacle. From the fourteenth to the seventeenth century, France and the Low Countries would create some of the most incredible Tapestry Art ever produced. Up until ‘The Hundred Year War’ from 1337 to 1453, Paris was considered the centre of production for Tapestry Art in Europe. However, as war raged in Europe, many weavers left the France and moved North, primarily to Holland and Belgium. Many Tapestries were destroyed, but after the war a new period of learning and development would begin.

The Renaissance marked an important revival of the Arts, and major design changes came about, within Tapestry Art. By the second half of the fifteenth century many workshops, especially in Northern France and the Southern Netherlands regions, were exporting Tapestries throughout Europe. By the end of the fifteenth century, the Brussels Tapestry workshops began to dominate production. Although some French, independent, Tapestry weavers did continue working, they could not match the sheer scale by which Brussels and the Netherlands were producing Tapestries. Once again, war would disrupt Tapestry production, as weavers were forced to relocate in Europe. Later, toward the end of the sixteenth century, Paris, once again, along with Munich and Delft would become the recognized ‘European Centres’ for Tapestry production.

It is not entirely certain where ‘Verdure Tapestries’ were first produced. However, it is known that by the sixteenth century, they had become a recognized Tapestry Art form. The word ‘Verdure’ is a derivative of the French word ‘Vert’, meaning green. Initially, ‘Verdure Tapestries’ were characterized by their green tones, complex foliage and flower motives. ‘Verdure Tapestries’ became regarded as works of art in their own right, yet were considered relatively inexpensive at the time. As their popularity rose, more expensive designs incorporating wildlife were produced. It is the more elaborately designed ‘Verdure Tapestries’ that we most often associate with the Verdure style today. For centuries ‘Verdure Tapestries’ remained highly popular, and were made on a huge scale for exportation. That was, until the arrival of wallpaper, which served as more economical way to decorate a room.

In recent years ‘Verdure Tapestries’ have seen a revival, and is a popular choice of Tapestry Art for the modern home. A ‘Verdure Tapestry’ can change a room, by creating a striking and impressive focal point. Something which cannot be matched by wallpaper alone. If you are looking for a classic example of Tapestry Art, the subtle earthy tones of ‘Verdure Tapestries’ can deliver that, whilst also being compatible with almost any style of décor. They are available is a range of sizes, which means you can enjoy their aesthetic beauty virtually anywhere, and within budget. ‘Verdure Tapestries’ are historically considered to be among some of the most famous Tapestries ever produced. Today they have been accurately recreated for you to enjoy in your own home.

’Verdure Tapestries’ are highly stylized. However, you will find a good selection of themes to choose from. Fawn and Fauna, plus wonderful images of French Châteaux, classic gardens and scenic landscapes. The lush greenery depicted in ‘Verdure Tapestries’, along with the idyllic scenery cannot help but create a beautifully harmonious and natural focal point within a room. Peaceful, intricate, yet unobtrusive imagery which will complement and add to the ambience of your home. A Tapestry is an investment that will be there for generations to come. ‘Verdure Tapestries’ have always been admired by collectors and art enthusiasts alike. Today, these Tapestries are produced by some of the most respected Tapestry Art manufacturers in the world. Since the invention of the Jacquard Loom, and the development of computerized machinery, Tapestry Art has become an accessible commodity. Of course, you are by no means limited to ‘Verdure Tapestries’, there is an impressive variety of traditional and contemporary Tapestry Art available. ‘Verdure Tapestries’ appeal to many people. However, with such a huge selection of Tapestries available, you could never be short of inspiration for your home.

Tapestry Art – Beautiful Baroque

Tapestry Art – Beautiful Baroque

Scenery and landscapes have always been highly popular subjects for Tapestry Art. Ancient ruins, sculptured archways, castles and forest scenes, all of this is available for you to enjoy as Tapestry Art. The interest in Tapestry Art has surged in recent times, resulting in a huge range of classical reproductions and contemporary, original, artworks. Many of which have their roots based in many historical masterpieces. Today, many well known contemporary artists are granting licenses for their work to be reproduced as Tapestry Art. Regardless of which style of landscape you prefer, modern or classical interpretations. All will have a depth which can only be achieved through Tapestry Art. This is what makes this such a unique and unrivalled art form. It is the tactile quality of Tapestries which make them a popular modern day choice for the home, and of course, their beauty. Today, artists are not limited to producing Tapestries to satisfy the requirements of the rich aristocrats who once commissioned them. They are free to create, and you are free to choose. Also, thanks to modern technology, producing a Tapestry is less labour intensive, making Tapestry Art affordable for everyone. In fact, Tapestry Art has never been more accessible or diverse.

With regards to a medium which can truly match the complexities of literary expression, Tapestry Art has to be one of the most suitable art forms. The Romans, Greeks and leaders of Medieval Europe would often commission a Tapestry to record great battles and other important events. The famous Odyssey, written by the Greek, Homer, in 800BC was translated into Tapestry Art. Making his wonderful stories accessible to all the ancient Greeks, not just those who could read. Ovids Metamorphoses was understood by the Roman people through Tapestry Art. It is also believed Tapestry Art was created in Egypt, and by the Inca tribes. Many beautiful and historical Tapestries were produced in Medieval Europe, and it was during this time France became the first Tapestry production centre for the West.

Landscapes have always been a favored subject matter for Tapestry Art. Landscape Tapestries can signify many things, for many people. Some are drawn by the play of color and light, and enjoy the three dimensional perspective and depth a landscape Tapestry can achieve. For others, the scene might record a place or time that was greatly significant in their life. For those who love the grandeur of castles, reproductions of a famous series of Tapestries, known as Tenture de Maisons Royals, might be a preferable option. The Tapestries of the Royal Households, were originally commissioned by Louis XIV, circa 1670. Originally, a set of twelve Tapestries, each representing a month of the year, and each centres on scenes from various French, Royal residences.

All of the Tapestries were designed by Charles Le Brun, a highly productive painter who was the Premier Paintre du Roi of Louis XIV. That is, he was Louis first painter. The Sun King, Louis XIV was declared King of France by the age of four. It is well documented that he disliked Paris and would spend much time at the Palace of Versailles, which was built between 1661 and 1689. A reproduction of an original Tapestry by Le Brun, Chateau de Versailles, which represents the month of April, is a very popular choice today. The Palace of Versaille Tapestry is a wonderful example of the baroque Tapestry Art which is typically associated with the flamboyant reign of Louis XIV.

Another Tapestry from the same set, Versaille Garden, is also highly popular. This Tapestry also portrays the gardens at the Palace of Versaille, although depicts a different perspective. The Versaille Garden Tapestry is worked vertically, not horizontally, as is The Palace of Versaille. This Tapestry also has a much more elaborate border, and the landscape has been composed to reflect the sensation of looking through a window. Another piece from the Tenture de Maisons Royals Tapestries is Chteau Bellevue. Again, a deep, elaborate border, frames the Tapestry, which depicts the view from a balcony. This series of Tapestries all reflect the highly detailed and elaborate tone of French Tapestry Art, during the seventeenth century. In fact, the lavish Baroque Tapestry Art, so obvious in the Tenture de Maisons Royals Tapestries, is considered a pinnacle example of this style. One which has never been surpassed, but today, is available to everyone.
